1920's vintage cards are beautiful, with lots of vivid colors.  Many of them were made by Whitney, and they are small die-cut cards on thin paper;  they open up and there is a verse inside.  The vivid colors and designs remind me a bit of Mary Engelbreit and her holiday designs;  I wonder if she was inspired by these cards with her art?  Many of these cards feature beautiful children in idyllic scenes.
1930's to 1940's vintage Valentine cards for children are die-cut.  The 1930's cards are on card stock, while many 1940's World War II vintage cards may be on thinner paper.   They have beautiful colors (lots of primary and bright colors).  These cards have a more child-like theme than earlier cards.  They may feature children playing, cats, dogs (many Scottie dog cards), animals, and school house or schoolroom themes.
Baby boomer vintage Valentines from the 1950's to early 1960's feature cats, dogs (lots of Poodle and Dachshund dogs), horses, and childrens and teens in action - bowling, rollerskating, at the malt shop, playing baseball.  Some of them feature cartoon or TV characters.   They have puns and a silly, more flip sense of humor than earlier cards.
