CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR POT HOLDER FABRIC:
- Across the width of the fabric, rotary cut an 11” wide strip of fabric.
- Subcut this strip into four 9” wide pieces
- If you’ve selected the elastic loop design, rotary cut two 1-1/2” wide by 11” long strips from the extra fabric
LAYERING THE POTHOLDER SANDWICH
1. Place one Insul-Bright piece on bottom.
2. Place two cotton batting pieces on top of Insul-Bright.
3. Place the two cotton fabric pieces (right sides together) on top – if you’ve selected the elastic loop design see below for further directions.
4. Using extra long straight pins, pin all layers together in the middle portion of the potholder keeping pins away from the edges.
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS (for elastic loop design)
- With right sides together fold 1-1/2” wide cotton strip in half lengthwise and sew a 1/4" seam.
- Using a loop turner, turn right side out and press.
- Using a safety pin, feed 1/4" wide elastic through each piece. Gather up elastic until each piece measures about 4-1/2” and sew ends to secure elastic.
- Follow layering instructions 1 & 2 above. Place one layer of cotton fabric right side up and pin as described in layering instruction 4.
- Arrange elastic piece into loop shape and with loop facing towards center of pot holder, pin ends to left long side of potholder edge about ½” down from top edge. Sew elastic loop in place with a 1/4" seam.
- Remove center pins and place second piece of cotton fabric (right side down) on pot holder sandwich and re-pin in center of pot holder.
- Follow sewing instructions below to complete pot holder (except for ribbon loop finish).
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS (for ribbon/button loop design)
- With cotton fabric side of the packet facing up, with walking foot attached to your machine, stitch around pot holder with a 3/8” seam allowance leaving a 4” long opening on one of the long sides of potholder (backstitch at starting and ending points and over elastic if used). Angle cut corners to about 1/8” from stitching and trim remaining edges (except in 4” opening area) to 1/8” from stitching.
- Turn pot holder right side out, pushing corners out with point turner. Fold opening edges to inside and press entire pot holder.
- With longer stitch length, topstitch around entire pot holder approximately 2” in from edge.
- Starting just above top of opening, topstitch around entire potholder approximately 1/4" from edge being sure to catch both edges of opening with stitching. Press when done.
Cut a 6” piece of 3/8” wide grosgrain ribbon and handstitch to left corner securing with a button as per picture.
