NOTICE: Cotton Prices                          February 5, 2011

Bad news: Cotton prices are going up

Good news: It’s only a little

You have probably noticed or heard that cotton prices are going up worldwide. Unfortunately, I will need to pass along some of these increases as various mills and manufacturers raise their wholesale prices.

One reason for the current price increase is that cotton prices have not risen during the preceding 20 years at the same rate as other commodities. So apparently, we have had lower prices for longer than we should have and now we need to make up part or all of that difference.

Luckily, the increases so far are only in the range of 10-20%, so that only amounts to 10-20¢ on every dollar. Really quite affordable considering cotton prices have been stable for nearly 20 years.

There are many other reasons for the current price increase. These reasons are basic supply and demand: fewer mills in the US and worldwide, increases in fuel prices and therefore shipping costs, drought, regional flooding, labor shortages and wage increases worldwide, increases in import duties, changes in the value of the US dollar, and increases in the cost to print fabric.

Remarkably, beautifully printed and finished cotton and poly-cotton fabric is still a great deal for all of us who love to sew, decorate, quilt, and craft.

All your favorite fabric manufacturers are working to maintain the best pricing for fabric fans: Timeless Treasures, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, Alexander Henry, Marcus Brothers, Moda Fabrics, Hoffman, and many more.
