Cheap Choice Brave and New Music Editions - Following in the footsteps of Petrucci, Playford and Walsh in bringing music in a convenient form to a wide public, I publish editions of early-music repertoire and sources for recorders and other instruments. Basic editorial principles are normally to provide a clean urtext edition from a single historical source. Editorial additions are kept to a minimum and shown in the usual ways (brackets, accidentals above the stave etc.) with alterations from the source signalled in footnotes or in a brief commentary. Where appropriate, parts are provided in a variety of clefs and/or transpositions for a range of different instruments. Words are always included in full for vocal music with translations and guidance on pronunciation if necessary. Page turns are designed to be manageable by instrumentalists! A facsimile of the original source is provided where possible for reference. Alongside the urtext, some editions also contain editorial ornamented versions based on a named historical source.

Bach: Concerto in g minor (BWV 1056) for soprano recorder and strings
Byrd: Ave Verum Corpus (Gradualia, 2nd Edition, 1610) for 4 voices, recorders or viols - facsimiles made simple edition
Byrd: 2 Easter pieces - Christ Rising + Christ is Risen for 6 voices, recorders or viols. These two wonderfully elaborate pieces form an extended pair rather like a pavan and galliard.

Christopher Welch: Six Lectures on the Recorder and Other Flutes. A key early work on the recorder and its history containing a wealth of information that is still useful today. The first 3 lectures were reprinted in 1962 with an introduction by Edgar Hunt, but the present CD-ROM edition will reproduce all 6 lectures for the first time since the original edition of 1911.
Recorder and Music Magazine CD-ROM Archive. Currently projected in 3 volumes, this archive will contain all the back issues of the magazine for the first 30 years, starting with the very first issue of May 1963. In fully searchable PDF™ format. An essential resource for players, researchers, libraries, recorder societies and anyone with an interest in the recorder. Vol 1 (1963-74) is projected for publication in Autumn 2006
Morley: Complete 3-part Madrigals 1597 For the first time, these gems of the renaissance repertoire will be made available complete in an edition practical for use by instrumentalists. Words will be included to allow the edition also to be used by singers and to indicate the phrasing. Page turns will be manageable and a variety of transposed parts provided for use by recorders and other instruments. Includes a facsimile of the original print.

Mattheson: Der Brauchbare Virtuoso (1720) The first sonatas published in Germany specifically for the baroque flute, these works (and Mattheson’s music in general) have tended to be overlooked by performers. Mattheson’s flute sonatas are among his best works in a fresh and unpredictable style that contrasts with the more “classic” baroque of Corelli, Handel and Bach. For the first time, the CD will contain urtext editions of the complete sonatas for flute and (transposed up by the customary minor third) for alto/treble recorder. Those lucky enough to own a voice flute can use the alto recorder solo part (sounding a third lower on voice flute) to play at the original flute pitch without having to transpose.
Bertrand: Le Premier Livre des Amours de P. de Ronsard mis en musique à IIII parties par Anthoine de Bertrand, natif de Fontanges en Auvergne (Paris : Le Roy & Ballard 1578). 35 delightful chansons by a little known 16th century French composer, who had the distinction of being assassinated by protestant extremists only a few years after the publication of these works because he had written music for the catholic church. As with many renaissance works, they survive complete in only a single source. With subtle word-painting and a unique use of colourful harmony, these chansons stand out from the many composed in 16th century France and are delightful to sing and easy to play yet highly effective on instruments. (A selection of the songs is available in exquisite performances by the Ensemble Clément Janequin on a Harmonia Mundi CD).
