| | If you have LP records to dispose of, I wish you the best of luck!
People have unrealistic expectations of what their old records are worth. Since the introduction of the LP, the 78 became virtually obsolete. Now that CD’s are here, buying LPs because one liked the sound or the cover art, is a thing of the past. As a result, the value of LP’s has steadily decreased.
Most of the stuff I want to buy or trade for was made before 1965. Sure, most collections may have scarce items in them, and gathering these desirable records is worthwhile. However, after the most saleable items are removed, the remaining records have virtually no value. So, I usually pay 25 per cent of the selling price if the record is mint & if I can sell it for at least $10. AND, for stuff that won’t be put on my Web Lists OR is in less than A+ condition, I won’t pay much. Depending on the vintage & category - 25 to 50 cents each.
If records fail to sell through my web-lists at my minimum price of $10 per LP, I generally trade them off to dealers/collectors, usually at a one-for-one basis, but the rest have to be given away. Selling records for less than my minimum price is simply not worth the trouble. These worthless records are not bad, just not collectible.
When people call me for appraisals, I usually won't travel locally to look at fewer than a thousand records. Not only that, but most large collections outside this area are probably not worth the expense of transporting & sorting them.
So, be honest. Decide in advance how you really feel about selling your records. If you are likely to accept any reasonable offer, you should say so. If you are planning to take competing bids, that is also fair enough; but leave me out of it.
And be realistic. If it is a typical collection, with gems interspersed widely among run-of-the-mill items, remember that I will be paying mostly for the gems.
In other words, it's a buyer's market! |
