FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about our HHO products.
If you don't see an answer to your question here, please feel free to e-mail us your query.

Use this list of Question links to navigate the page.

Q: How Does HHO Work?

  1. This is actually a very commonly asked question, with a very common misconception of how HHO really works. We figured this would be best put on it's own page. For an in-depth answer, please visit our How HHO Works page.

Q: What System do I need (or is best) for my vehicle?

  1. Every vehicle's components are different. Please feel free to email us at kempco@yahoo.com with the Year, Make, Model, and Engine Size, and we will be happy to give you the best System recommendation! We have found that a good way to match engine size with how many Cells are needed is:  4cyl = 1-2 Cells, 6cyl = 3-4 Cells, and 8cyl = 5-6 Cells.  Another way to look at would be One Cell per Liter of Engine Size, and round up. We recommend starting out with at least a 2-Cell System for the added benefit of the divided "voltage-in." Also, depending on your vehicle, you may need an electronics enhancer module to manage the Factory ECU (Environmental Control Unit).  If your vehicle is equipped with a factory MAP Sensor, you will may a DEMSE (Dual Edge MAP Sensor Enhancer) to control the amount of fuel (gasoline or diesel) that is being delivered by your injectors to your engine to compensate for the added hydrogen. If your vehicle does not have a MAP sensor, then we also have EFIE (Electronic Fuel Injection Enhancer) units that'll manage the O2 sensors. Please refer to our eBay store for required item listings and prices.

Q: Are your HHO Generator Systems safe for my engine?

  1. Yes. Our Systems are quite safe for your engine. In fact, introducing hydrogen to any internal combustion engine will asset the fuel (gasoline or diesel) in a more complete burn, thus reducing carbon deposits left behind on your pistons and valves. This results in a cleaner exhaust emission, as well as lessening the carbon footprint on our earth! Besides seeing better fuel economy, you will notice a more efficient running engine.

Q: Are your HHO Hydrogen Generators safe for use with diesel engines?

  1. Yes. Our HHO Hydrogen Generators can be used with a diesel engine. The Hook-Up Kit parts for a diesel engine is just slightly different than that of the Single Supply, or Dual Supply, for gasoline engines.

Q: How many more Miles Per Gallon will I get if I use your HHO Generators?

  1. Depending on your vehicle, and Cell System in use, there can be anywhere from a 15% to 50% gain. Most people will see a 25% to 35% increase in MPG. On one of our tests, we installed a 2-Cell System on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. This particular vehicle went from 15 MPG, in the city, up to 18-19 MPG. Highway testing is still under way, but we can expect to see about the same percentage increases. Again, it's all dependent on how many HHO Cells you run in your vehicle. Your particular vehicle, individual driving habits, and outside conditions can all play a factor in mileage gains, as well. It is probably the most effective if your vehicle's engine is in good shape. So a tuned up engine BEFORE such improvements are possible, will make sure you get the most out of your HHO System. Mechanical and electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors, broken pistons, or loose wires, will prevent fuel economy gains and must be fixed before you can enjoy the full benefits of Hydrogen-on-demand. We highly recommend, if your vehicle is around 70,000 miles or more, that you make sure your O2 Sensors are in full-functioning order (it's a good chance they may need to be replaced; this will greatly decrease HHO gains, especially if you are equipping an EFIE with your System).

Q: Are your HHO Generators good for carburetor engines or is it only for fuel injection ones?

  1. These Generators are great for vehicles with carbureted engines. And, since most of the carbureted motors do not have an ECU (Environmental Control Unit), there is no need for an Electronics Enhancer. The Generators work equally as well on fuel injected vehicles. Although, with most newer engines, the presence of an Electronics Enhancer will be required. An Electronics Enhancer will keep the ECU from negating the HHO System's output, and provide optimum savings and performance. The addition of Hydrogen On Demand Generators on diesel motors has proven to increase horsepower and maintain cleaner exhaust, as well; just like the gasoline engines. Can you imagine how much cleaner our air would be if every 18-wheeler on the highway employed one of these devices?

Q: What is the capacity of the jar?

  1. The jar size is 32 ounces, but we use only 24 ounces of distilled water with our catalyst.

Q: Is the Electrolyte Solution necessary for your Generators to function?

  1. Yes. Very much so. The Electrolyte Solution is needed order to create Electrolysis. Whether you choose baking soda, KOH, or NaOH for your catalyst, you will need continuity in your Electrolyte Solution to allow the electrodes to split the water atoms, thus creating the HHO produced from the System. We highly recommend using distilled water, along with a catalyst. That way there are no unforeseen inconsistencies within the solution that could cause a breakdown of the electrodes, the Cell to overheat, and/or potentially damage the entire System. If you are thinking about just using tap water as your solution, consider the minerals in tap water to act as your catalyst. They are incalculable and ever-changing from day to day, and from tap to tap. We choose to use distilled water with the catalyst, so we can have a measurement as a benchmark for amperage draw that we can maintain and or change to reach our objective (which is, of course, being able to produce as much HHO as possible, without overheating the cell units). Since this is not an exact science, we can use all the help we can get from our notes or benchmarks, and this is what we've come up with so far.

Q: What is the concentration of the Electrolyte Solution inside the jar?

  1. The ratio for concentration of each jars’ electrolyte is determined by the amount of catalyst needed to fall within the desired amperage draw. This can be adjusted to meet that of your set-up. Multi-Cell Systems and alternate wiring schemes can require differing amounts of catalyst, and starting reference points with tips and options, is included in our Instruction Manual. The amount of Cells in your System will determine the amount of catalyst per jar. Pages 9-10 in the installation manual will tell you how much to use, based on your Cell set-up. If you are unsure of what to do here, or you did not receive our installation manual, please STOP and contact our Support Department regarding this matter. An incorrect concentration of Electrolyte Solution could lead to a breakdown in the electrodes.

Q: Which Catalyst is better?

  1. We have done testing with baking soda, KOH, and NaOH. All three of these catalysts are good, and there are others, however we recommend baking soda, as it is safest to handle. Using the Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) may keep your cells cleaner and produce more HHO per amperage draw, yet we stick with the baking soda for the safety in handling. We feel safety outweighs the aforementioned benefits.

Q: Can I use water from a faucet, or can only distilled water be used?

  1. Distilled water is preferred since the minerals in faucet water can act as a catalyst and also cause inconsistencies from one faucet to another. Plus, the additional minerals found in tap water can cause premature corrosion of the electrodes.

Q: What should I do to prevent the water from freezing in the winter time?

  1. You can use a gasoline antifreeze product called “Heet,” which can be found at most auto parts stores, or online. The ratio would be 1 oz of "Heet" replacing 1 oz of distilled water in each jar filled to 24 oz.  This should protect the Generator to about -10 degrees Fahrenheit (about -23 degrees Celsius).  You may find that the solution is a bit slushy, but when you start up the Cells they will liquify quickly. If you believe that the Generator Cells could reach temperatures lower than -23 degrees Celsius, then you may want to look into Heat tape or Heating Pads, that are commonly used for vehicle batteries in freezing temperatures, to wrap around the units overnight or extended periods of parking in such temperatures. Much like the idea of using a Core Heater for your engine block, or a household water supply heating element.  Just be sure to remove from the Cells before starting them up again.

Q: How often does one have to replace water?

  1. There is an initial start-up cleaning that should be within 50 miles of first use. This will clean up any of the residue on the electrodes produced from manufacturing and handling. After that you will just “Top Off” with distilled water (without catalyst) when the level gets down to the first set of electrodes exposed. That’s where our handy “Top-Off” Bottle comes in and makes for quick and easy maintenance. Generally, you will need to empty out each Generator and start afresh every few thousand miles, however, we like to keep our Generators running at top performance and replace about once a month.

Q: Is there a special fixture to secure the Generator System under the hood? And do you supply these parts in your "Hook-Up Kits"?

  1. Many items like cable ties, bungee cords, custom housing, and a bit of ingenuity can be used to secure your Generator(s). These are the only items we do not provide in our Hook-Up Kits because there are so many scenarios for individual vehicles, as well as, personal preferences which we leave up to the individual. In our Installation Manual we give you some useful ideas to help with the mounting of the Hydrogen On Demand Systems that we sell.

Q: You don't include brackets, wire ties, or clamps with your Generator Systems. How do I mount the System under the hood?

  1. Since every engine compartment is different, we aren't able to provide a unified style of a mounting bracket. You'll have to get a little creative in this department, when it comes to finding space under the hood. Keep in mind, though, that all the Cells do not have to be right next to each other. Just as long at they are hooked up in series correctly, everything will work. Just remember to leave a little space in between the jars for cooling (if you decide to put the Cells next to each other). Misc. brackets, wire ties, and clamps can easily be found at your local hardware store. But, don't limit yourself to just those items; you may even be able to find spare item around the house to use in fashioning a way to mount the Cells.

Q: How many liters per minute does one Generator produce?

  1. One Generator will produce up to 300 milliliters per minute. Adding another Cell will more than double your HHO output due to the division of voltage across the Cells, which lowers the amperage allowing for more catalyst in your electrolyte solution.

Q: Do I need a relay switch?

  1. A relay is not really necessary until you start drawing more amps than the circuit you tap into is rated for.  Most ignition systems are 15 amps, and you can check that by tracing to the fuse for the wire you plan to splice into.  If you have a relay laying around, it wouldn't hurt to use it.  On just one Cell, you have to watch them more closely than a Multi-Cell System because you have to deal with all 12 volts coming in. Whereas, with a 2-Cell set-up, the 12 volts are divided into two and a lot easier to monitor the 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda per Cell,  and 1 whole teaspoon per Cell on a 2-Cell system (more margin for error). This will more than double the HHO output, in the long run.

Q: What is a PCV Enhancer?

  1. A PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Enhancer regulates the ventilation from your engines crankcase as it's returned to the combustion chamber, therefore not being vented to the atmosphere (as most pre-1986 vehicles were doing).  Using our PCV Enhancer device will clean the blow-by. It will reduce the oil that would normally re-enter the engine to be burned again, which causes further buildup of the carbon deposits in your engine.  So, essentially the PCV Enhancer "catches" this excess oil that would go back into your engine. Minimal upkeep is required, however, you will need to empty the oil cache about every two to three weeks (that is how much excess there is!). For an even more in-depth look at what Positive Crankcase Ventilation is, check out this wiki.

Q: Where is the best vacuum source?

  1. We have found the best vacuum source, for most hook-ups, is to use the PCV valve line. You will need to locate your Positive Crankcase component in order to utilize its vacuum line. We have found that Autozone's Website is a good resource for finding most vehicles component locations. Please, also, refer to the Q&A above about what a PCV Enhancer is.

Q: Will an HHO System affect my vehicle's insurance policy coverage?

  1. As far as we know, there is no affect to vehicle insurance coverage on vehicles installed with a HHO Generator System. However, you may want to ask (possibly anonymous) your insurance provider, just to be sure. Say you have an add-on Hydrogen product that has been proven to be safe in hundreds of thousands of miles in most parts of the world and in all climates/car types; see what they respond. Some vehicle modifications have been known to change insurance policies, so stress to the insurance agent that you're talking about HYDROGEN-ON-DEMAND from water. Therefore, there will be none of the dangers of storing and filling Hydrogen in your vehicle.
