I have a unique hobby, which involves metal detecting, researching, and traveling. Cleaning and preserving my finds is another important part of my hobby. I carefully clean my finds and put them up for sale. Each coin, especially the 1600's countermarked pieces, is a unique masterpiece because they were created by by heating the coin and restamping it with a new value and date. This process devalued the coin, but it limited the amount of coins in circulation as well making the metal more valuable than the coin itself. This way of looking at ancient inflation made for very interesting artwork in these countermarked coins, which quite often have two or three dates and denominations. They are also referred to as pirate coins because any old coin could be restruck into a completely new coin because of the importance of the metal the coin was made of namely bronze, copper, silver, or gold.
