How do I choose the right size violin for my child?

First lets define the different violin sizes:

Measure the body only of your violin (not including the neck), the measurement below will show you the violin size.

Violin Body Sizes:

14 inch - 4/4 size (or full size)

13 inch - 3/4 size violin

12 inch - 1/2 size violin

11 inch - 1/4 size violin

10.25 inch - 1/8 size violin

9.25 inch - 1/10 size violin

8.25 inch - 1/16 size violin

To determine the correct size violin for your child, extend their arm so that it is perpendicular to the body, measure the length from their  neck to the middle of the palm.  Using that dimension and the chart below you can determine the correct violin size.

Violin Sizing Chart:

23" or more 4/4 (Full Size)

22" - 3/4 size

20" - 1/2 size

18"  - 1/4 size

16"  - 1/8 size

15"  - 1/10 size

14"  - 1/16  size

Violin Bow Sizes:

4/4 full size violin bow - 29 inch

3/4 size violin bow - 27 inch

1/2 size violin bow - 24 inch.

1/4 size violin bow - 21 ½ inch

1/8 size violin bow - 20 inch.

1/16 size violin bow - 17 inch.
