| | | Just in case you don’t know what a Surcee is, let me explain… A Surcee is a Southern term generally used for a small, special and unexpected gift that always elicits squeals of delight from the recipient. Having grown up in the Carolinas, Surcee is a term that I have heard for years. It is generally used by ladies with whom you mentally associate white gloves, sweet iced tea, fragrant magnolias, and that quiet, genteel nature which is handed down between generations – true southern belles that remind us of Scarlett or Melanie from Gone With the Wind.
Any unexpected gift or remembrance may be classified as a Surcee. Although the spelling may vary (surcy, circe, cercie, surcie), Surcees generally come in all shapes and sizes; what makes the Surcee special is that the giver spent time and effort thinking about the recipient and made the effort to do something nice for them. Chosen carefully and thoughtfully, even small Surcees can make a significant impact and they always bring smiles, gushing gratitude, and, at least one, “Oh, dear, you shouldn’t have!”
