GUIDE TO USED BOOK DESCRIPTIONSTypical Usage: 'F/VG' ( fine book in very good jacket).
Very Fine (VF) - As new with no defects, crisp, tight binding, absolutely no flaws under close examination.
Near Fine (NF) - No defects, little usage, and markings are minimal. A minor flaw may be present.
Very Good (VG) - It shows some signs of wear and is no longer fresh. Attractive, but not unusually so. Does not lie flat when open.
Good (G) - The average used book with all pages present. Books with loose bindings, highlighting, cocked spine, torn dust jackets, can fall into this category. Wrinkled or folded pages.
Fair (FR) - Obviously well-worn and handled but no text pages are missing, however, it may be without endpapers or a title page. There might be markings, but they do not interfere with readability.
Poor (P) - All text is legible but may be soiled and have binding defects. Reading copies and binding copies fall into this category.

REMAINDER:
What is a remainder mark?
Remainder marks identify brand new books as overstock. Occasionally a publisher prints too many copies of a title, or retail stores return excess stock for credit. The unused book is then marked to identify it as a return, and sold at significant price reductions to wholesalers and discount book dealers. The remainder mark prevents someone from buying the book at a discounted price, and then trying to return it for a refund of the full price at a retail book store.
Remainder marks usually consist of a black line or dot on the bottom or top page edges of the book. The marks are usually inconspicuous and insignificant and do not detract from the book's appearance or readability.
