"Ammonites" or "Ammonoidea,"
"Opalescent Aragonite" the words refer to ammonite.
Although somewhat simple in form, are extremely rich in the information they yield to modern day scientists. "Organic mineral" fossil specimens, Ammonites are preserved shells of an ancient order of beautiful invertebrate animals that were once very dominating throughout the earth's seas.
They lived in the later Paleozoic and throughout the Mesozoic Era-a time span of nearly 400 million years. As well as the end of the Cretaceous period approximately 66.5 million years ago.
Asteroids massive impact brought an end to the reign of the dinosaurs and also caused the extinction of the ammonites because of the massive blanketing of dust particles that covered the oceans cutting off light and air supplies to the living beings. They were believed to be as intelligent as the modern day squids and octopi, that you see in the oceans of the world today with shells as large as 6 feet in diameter.
Today the shell has become one of the most beautiful and rare gemstones. Ammonite displays fantastic colors including red, orange, blue, yellow and green across its surfaces. Some will include the rare gold, pink and purple as well. Each color may be surrounded by black lines, creating a unique mosaic effect very similar looking to a stained glass window. Some stones are predominantly one color, others reflect the entire color spectrum. |
